Bubblewrap

This design from Van Metschke at South Hills Church in Corona, California is begging to be popped.

So what did he use? Yep…he used bubblewrap! He bought 4-foot wide rolls of it from here and lit them with Mega-Lite NE Color Wash LED bricks. Wow!

Yeah, this is beautiful looking. Reminds me of one of our motion backgrounds. Definitely want to incorporate this soon. Great job!

For those able to do this in their venue, I think using some interesting loops prjected onto this would make a nice LED screen replica.

How did you hang it? Is it rounded or a wall? How did you frame it?

Brandon. I have a winch set just in front of the back cyc. I put 2×4’s together to form a 30′, 4×4 beam. I cut some thin strips off of a 2×4 that look like a yard stick. I popped a couple rows of bubbles on the top and sandwiched the plastic between the beam and the thin strip and air stapled it. I did the same at the bottom with some thin strips to help it hang.

They are attached at the top to a horizontal batten http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batten_(theater)
that is suspended from the ceiling of the stage. Then they are stabilized at the bottom with a strip of wood screwed to the deck to keep it from moving.

This looks different, creative, and like it has great detail. Love when it something so basic. Great idea!!
So were you able to save and reuse it?

  6. Brandon says:

Did you have any trouble with the bubble wrap wanting to tear at the perforations?

  7. Van Metschke says:

The role of bubble rap we have does not have any perforations, it is a continuous roll.

Are the bubbles downstage or upstage?

I liked it so much I went out and bought a roll of bubble wrap for Faithbridge. It sure takes light well. People have come to the stage to see what this metallic thing is we have there and up said, “Oh; its bubble wrap.” When we are through with this look I am going to pin some it to some side walls and hope it doesn’t show until the light hits it. We have used both a white cyc behind it with lots of scrollers on the cyc and LED light on the front and a black cyc with scrollers on the front and LED on the back of the wrap. We have some overhead gobo’s of circles that produce a fireworks kind of look. This has been a good find John

Love the idea. I am wanting to use this idea in a set design for a play. What size are the bubbles on your bubble wrap?

  18. John says:

I think the bubbless were 1 1/2 oe so, be sure that you don’t have the kind that tears every foor or so like paper towels. I found mine at a paper and janator supply house.
