Dark Projection

Paul Smollen from La Croix United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau, MO brings us this interesting projection piece.

This design was used for a series dealing with the 7 final statements of Jesus from the cross. The intent was to focus on the power and simplicity of the words themselves.

The backdrop was a gray-black non-woven material from a company called Studio Productions. It’s a lot like weed barrier and appears black but will take video very nicely.

They hung three 15’w by 22’h panels and weighted the bottom to make it hang straight. They had to tape and pin the seams to make them lay flat. Then they used a 2-projector composite imaging setup through Resolume software and a TripleHead video card to produce a large image for the graphic.

During worship time, the background also accepted color and patterns from the intelligent lighting and allowed for a bright, energetic setting.

This looks awesome. Anybody know if this is possible to do with just the two projectors and using the background dually as the place for the design and text for worship songs and scripture texts? We want to do something like this at our church, but don’t have the two additional side screens.

I don’t know if Resolume Arena software interfaces with graphics programs since it loads all graphic and video files from its own file sources. Definitely something Im going to explore! If you get the answer first, please post it here!

  3. Great job La Croix! I love this idea!
