Hanging Filters

Luke Howard from First Baptist Church of Opelika in Alabama brings us these dropped hanging filters on their back wall.

After seeing Air Filtered on CSDI, Luke wanted to use air filters as a medium. He also wanted to recreate the effect of a pillow wall. The name of the series was Square, so 20″ x 20″ air filters worked out perfectly for our design. They went with the white ones that have ridges and metal caging on the back. They seemed the sturdiest and the only white ones they could find.

They took black duct tape and wrapped all four edges of all of their filters. Then they punched two holes in the top and bottom of the filter. Using zip ties, they connected each row together. They then used zip ties to hang them from the truss in the pattern they had decided on. They had an LED par can at the top of each row to allow for multiple color combinations and movements.

Then they built two square cubes. Using leftover LED tape, he was able to create a cardboard insert for the bottom with the tape on it. Using this allowed them to get rid of having a “blacked out” box beneath it to store an LED par can. It worked out perfectly for that 20 x 20 x 20 cube.

I love this idea! I’m looking at using it in my church.
I’ve got a taller black space, so I’d be looking at hanging 12 filters down. Do you think the weight would be too much for the cardboard if I used zip ties? I’m afraid that they will pull apart, but doesn’t look like you have any pulling with 6.
    Thanks!

What wattage were the LED lights?
