Throwback: Mountains and Valleys

Jordan Leino from Seven Marks Church in Raleigh, NC brings us this stage design for their series titled “The Valley”—about pain and suffering. (originally posted April 2014)

They built the framing off-site (small enough sections to fit through double-doors) and painted any exposed edges black. They brought them in and installed the framing pieces into the designed mountain shapes, leaving their large center screen exposed between the mountains so they could do various creative ideas projected there.

For the surface of the mountains, they used black 1/2″x4’x8′ Sound-Deadening Structural Insulating Sheathing. This was cheaper than plywood and already black. Possibly helped a little with acoustics as well. They just needed to paint 1 coat over the 4×8 sheets to cover up the green logo printed on the sheets. The edges of the mountains were 1/4″x1″ flat trim pieces, already white in the store. The stripes were just white gaffe tape ripped into long 1/2″ strips. The distance between each stripe got slightly smaller as it went up the mountain. Stripe install required someone who is maticulous. If the stripes were not straight, it was very noticeable.

Strategic lighting made the set come to life, as the white tape caught the colored LED lights very well.

This is awesome! Just wondering how you got them to stand up on their own. How are they anchored?

  2. Jed Kasica says:

What kind of paint did you use?

  3. Jordan says:

They were anchored straight to the ground and they were anchored to the wall where possible. We also had some diagonal supports to the ground in a few places, and the tallest rear walls were also attached to the beams in the ceiling.

We just used a flat black paint.

    Hey there,
I was wondering how much this set cost?

  5. Tim says:

How did you attach the 4×8 insulation sheets to the frames? Did you glue them or use some other method?

  6. Kevin VanLoo says:

how did you get the stars to project only in that location of the stage set?

  7. Jonathan says:

Did you do anything special to avoid seems where the insulation sheets meet?
