Multi-colored Cross

Brad Hillier from Bay Life Church in Brandon, FL brings us this great glowing design. (originally posted June 2016)

This design was an effort to go non-thematic but still have some punch. The challenge was to design a backdrop that didn’t evoke something specific – i.e. a commercial brand, a recognized visual, etc. It was surprisingly difficult in today’s media-rich culture. This is what they came up with.

The main structure was made out of steel framing studs that were painted black then screwed together and braced for strength. They used Coroplast to provide the white panels that they could hit with colored light. They constructed it in two 15’ wide sections and joined it after it was hung. They also attached tubes with a paper filter and a string of LED tape inside them to give the piece some pop. The color wash light bars and the LED tape were plugged into their light board to allow them to have multiple colors and independent control of each panel and tube on the piece.

A word of caution: They loved it for a while but it eventually felt like owning a bright yellow Corvette! They were definitely ready when it came down.

Love the design! What type of tubing did you get and where did you get it from? Thanks.

Agreed…. seems like the question for this set. Innovative approach. What type of tubing did you get – and where did you get it from?

looks like they used florescent club covers and put paper or diffuser inside it. Heres a link.
