Throwback: Ring Bling

Grant Morgan from Whittier Area Community Church in Whittier, CA brings us these delicious circles adorning their stage walls. (Originally posted January 2013)

They got their inspiration from a window display at Anthropologie. They used 8×4-foot Masonite panels cut into 5-inch strips. This size of strip had enough depth to be seen throughout the room, but enough strength to be bent into the circle shapes.

With help from Jason Lentz and Josh Mervin they were able to cut, paint, drill, and form the hoops (took almost one whole day).

After the hoops were formed they started attaching them to the wall on the back of their stage. They wanted as much depth as they could get but also wanted the lights to hit them well.

Hey guys. Trying to do this idea as part of our stage design. My problem? Finding material that will bend. I got Masonite and it didn’t look like your photo and broke in half. I’m out of options. Any suggestions? What was the thickness? 8 ft x 5″ correct?

      Hey Irene,
Check out the link that I posted earlier in the comments, there’s a little more detail there.
I used small nuts and bolts to hold them together through pre-drilled holes in the masonite.
We hung them on screws that were drilled into the wall, I found some foot long screws that stuck out far enough to give them the depth that we wanted. I used a circular saw to cut the masonite into the size strips we wanted and then painted some of the sides either green or orange.
I hope this information helps. If you have any other questions feel free to email me.
