Throwback: Stacks on Deck

Ryan Killebrew from Harvest Community Church in Mesa, Arizona brings us these cool light stacks. (Originally posted August 2011)

To create these bad boys the team spray painted plywood back and assembled the light tower boxes. They lined the openings with white light diffusers from fluorescent light fixtures (rectangle lights from offices). They produced four smaller rectangles from each light diffuser.

To light the boxes they placed one LED Par64 in each box. To keep the light from escaping the top they used black foam board tightly fitted into the tops.

Each tower was created with separate segments to let them easily move the pieces in and out of the movie theatre they meet in.

They kept the costs down by reusing plywood from previous projects. So the only cost was liquid nails, paint and the light diffusers.

I like the simple design. We also rent a movie theater and are looking for ways to make it seem more like our own worship space. One question: How do you hook the sections together or do you just stack them?

    Keep up the good work!

We attached two pieces of scrap wood on the inside, opposing sides of each box and sticking up over the top of the box a couple inches. This just gave us a little added safety so if they were bumped, they would stay together and wouldn’t topple over.

I’m WAY impressed with how clean the stage area looks. I’m the leader of the Worship Team of Genesis Church in Atoka, TN. We meet in a movie theater with a very similar setup and we are trying to come up with ways to clean up wires, cables, power cords, etc for amps, lights, etc. around our stage area. It seems like they just multiply and take over! LOL! How do you guys keep the stage area so clean? I see very few of the things we’re trying to hide…

You can see a couple of images (not the best, though) on our Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Genesis-Church/146863181998286?sk=photos

    Thanks in advance!

Sorry for the delayed response. To keep the stage clean we use mostly wireless hardware. Our mics, and IEMs are all wireless for the band. We run the sound board snake up the side and across the back to the stage box. The stage box is located directly in front of the drums to keep the XLR cables coming from the drums centralized. The lighting loop basically just skirts the outside of the stage so it keep the center clear.

      I hope this helps!
