Glendale Matias from Oasis Church in Los Angeles, California brings us so many great string art pieces for their stage and different environments. (Originally posted May 2013)
Their 2013 Easter concept was based around the idea of string (or yarn). Pulling, stretching, tying and sagging.
Main Stage:
Large balloons (26″ dia) were repeatedly wound and tied with starch soaked yarn. After the yarn had dried, they popped the balloon to reveal the shape.
Transition Space:
They have a large hallway leading from their classrooms to the back of church. They rented a large tent for service overflow, and that hallway space connected the main church to the tent. They wanted the space to be visually interesting as people walked from one space to another. Using the same idea of string, they attached screws into the wall at random varying points (about 4-6′ above floor). The screws were used as points for the string to be stretched from one to another. They also applied this theme to their flats using the same method. They had two different flat styles, hollow frame flat and a solid flat.
Lobby:
The team made wooden frames and mirrored the same method/process that was used on the flats and hung these frames like paintings in the lobby. A very talented youth volunteer (Mariah Cadena) developed the nail signs using a typeface that was custom designed.

i totally love this idea! :)
What was the starch solution you used made of?
LaNeilWorker…… it’s just straight up liquid starch. You should be able to find it at Wal-mart or any discount store. Look in the laundry section of the store.
Yes the starch was a combination of store purchase and making with home ingredients (1-3 tablespoons cornstarch to 2 cups water–more water if too stiff).
Do you know what type of stain was used on the wood?
The stain was a walnut color on pine frames.
What wood sheeting is used to back the Alive string banner? I would like to create a large banner approx 2 metre by 3 metres to go in my church in the UK but am worried it may be very heavy to hang on the wall. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks
These look really great! How did you get the perfectly round balloon shapes? What kind of balloons did you use for that?
