Throwback: The Titanic Rises

Chad “the ice” Ellenburg from Pleasant Valley Church in Winona, MN brings us this amazing Titanic replica. (nickname may or may not be Chad’s actual nickname) – originally posted May 2012

The 100 year anniversary of the Titanic sinking was too significant for them to pass up. So, they began a 4-week series (starting Easter).

The design was tricky. At first they were planning on a truly 3 dimensional structure. It became problematic because they needed most of the room to feel the perspective of the ship. They changed to a 2 1/2 dimensional ship and created a glorified pop-up book with three layers. This allowed them to force the perspective for most of the audience. It was primarily 2×4 construction with painted cardboard. Blue/grey ropes for the rigging. Lots of paint. Vellum paper for the portholes so that the light would shine through from behind. Haze machine to give it some atmosphere. There it is!

Fantastic job. Nice to see a set that obviously (after watching your video) was part of the whole message being delivered. I trust you had a successful series. Would have been fun building it too.
