Isaiah Johnson and Seth Medina from EastHill Church Family in Gresham, Oregon brings us this cool design inspired by Glowing Lines and Bars.
For this design they used RGB LED tape controlled by DMX to light it all.
The panels were constructed out of 1⁄5 inch 4×8 “underlayment” plywood (AKA luan) cut down the middle so each panel was 2 feet wide and then painted white.
On that they built a frame made of 1×2 and then 1×3 furring strips painted black to create a “pocket” for the LED tape to go inside.
They glued everything and used finishing nails to fasten it together.
Next Isaiah (their Tech Director) drilled a hole in one of the bottom corners on each panel (but hidden by the frame) to feed the wire through, then stuck the LED tape inside the pocket they created in the frame and screwed the decoder onto the back. The strips of tape weren’t long enough to go all the way around the panels so they had to solder a couple of lengths together to make it the whole way.
To hang the panels they just put a screw most of the way in (about 1⁄3 of an inch stuck out) on each side at the top and ran cotton tie line over their pipe grid and back down to sand bags to tie down.
They used sections of truss that they had on hand that were each 15 feet tall and put an additional 4 foot piece on the top of the two middle ones and stuck LED tape on the inside front (downstage) corners so the dots wouldn’t be visible but instead just illuminate the inside of the truss itself. Isaiah made this portion for a previous design which is why in the listed supplies there are two different LED tapes. They were purchased at different times.
