Stage Designs

Dropped Wood

Ryland Russell from Central Baptist Church Owasso in Oklahoma brings us this design for their youth camp.

This design was for their cabin worship times at Falls Creek Youth Camp. At Falls Creek the main tabernacle holds around 7,000 people, so for their in-cabin worship they wanted to create a more intimate atmosphere.

He was inspired by Tied and decided to use burlap, wood, and the antique light bulbs that have been used many times on this site for the set.

He bought a large roll of burlap off Amazon. They used large binder clips to attach the burlap to a 3/4 inch conduit pipe to create the back curtain. (the roll was actually 15 ft shorter than advertised) He bought a couple different style antique bulbs from 1000bulbs.com. 60 watt Marconi and 30 watt Radio style bulbs. He bought 35 different bulbs and light strands but ended up using fewer due to time.

The lamp chords he bought from paperlanternstore.com. They were all run to dimmers.

The wood was thin luan plywood that were ripped into 1 ft strips. He then stained them two different colors with spray-on stain.

The “Thirst” sign went with the camp theme and was cutout of the plywood using a rotozip.

The lighting was 4 Chauvet COLORpalette’s on the floor of the backdrop and a few small par cans and led’s hanging above the audience.

The total cost of the stage design was around $500.

great use of the space! They really defined it and made it look awesome. Good job. Strangely enough I much prefer the natural look over the LEDs. I’m normally all about purples and greens but the natural wood really made it pop.

  2. Ya, I agree. We left the LEDs on an Amber color 95 percent of the time.

You said you used less hanging bulbs due to time, but would there have been a wattage issue if you used them all? I remember our church had a stage design with bulbs all over the place. Randomly whole sections would go out during service. :| However I think they were all 60 watt or higher.

What did you guys use to connect the wood together. It looks great, was thinking about doing something like this

I drilled small holes in the boards (used one as a template for all the others) and put S hooks in the holes. Then we used some cheap chain and broke them apart in sections of 3 links. That way it was the same distance between the boards. If you look closely you can see it. I have some close up pictures if you need them.

Where did you purchase the hanging lights from?

  6. Ryland says:

Caleb, we bought two versions here… http://www.1000bulbs.com/product/54666/IN-L4099.html
