Tony Ambrose from South Bay Church in Riverview, FL brings us this great styrofoam stage.
From Tony: For our return to live services, we wanted to freshen up our stage. I found out that I could get these styrofoam boards for a great price at Lowe’s. They come in packs of 6 for about $10.
We sketched out a few different ways to arrange them that wouldn’t require any cutting, and decided on this alternating triple stripe setup.
The goal was to have each set of 3 be a square, so I did a little math to see how much space should be in between each piece. Once we had the first piece placed, all we needed was a ruler and a level. It took two of us about an hour and a half to install, using a few pieces of double-sided mounting tape on each piece.
Materials: 5 packs of the styrofoam, and 2 rolls of mounting tape.
Cost: Just under $65

Hello Tony Ambrose – I love your design, and so are the rest of our praise and worship team, its simple and beautiful to God be the glory. Please can you email me the sketch of your design? what type of light you use to light up the design? and how many light?and the position of the light?
Hi Steve. Thanks for the kind words.
We didn’t really do any sketching. Except for the math I did to find out how much space I wanted between the boards (which ended up being 3.66 inches to get the square look) and a little measuring and math to make sure the center lined up right, it was all freehand except for a ruler and a level. Once the center was in place, we just used what we had as a guide as we moved outward.
The only lights that are specific to the Styrofoam elements are four slim par 64s on the floor, splashing some color on them. There are two on the left and two on the right, placed right under the edge of the screen. On each side, we placed one aiming toward the drums and one aiming away. Everything else comes from the washes and spots that were already in place as part of our general lighting rig.
What did you attach the foam board too?
Looks great. We are considering foam for our stage, but do you know what treatments are needed to make the foam fire code compliant? We are right down the road from you in Sarasota, so local codes should be the same.
I’d like to know what the strips are connected to. Thanks
