Joshua Hoegh from First Baptist Church of Elgin in Elgin, IL brings us these mountain pieces for their VBS.
From Joshua: Every summer when VBS rolls around, I sit down with the design committee to figure out if there’s a feasible way for use to combine forces and utilize the theme of VBS for a sermon series. Otherwise, we have the grand & elaborate VBS stage sets that are only up for 1 week. We’ve had a number of great collaborations come out of this model, including our castle design a few years back (“Towers and Turrets” – https://churchstagedesignideas.com/towers-and-turrets/).
Not every year works out, but when it does – we make it count! Our VBS theme for 2015 was “Everest”, so we came up with a plan to create a mountain-scape on stage. We came up with the layout & shapes for each mountain peak, used 2X4 framing to support the plywood face, and then applied 2″ styrofoam sheets. The styrofoam was then sculpted, carved and painted to give the effect of snow-covered peaks. Top it all off with strategic lighting & stage pieces built by our VBS team, and this stage design became a home run.
The kids LOVED seeing mountains in our worship center, and it tied perfectly into our sermon series that summer, “Overcome” (all about confronting & overcoming life’s challenged with the power & strength of God).
