Flakes and Diamond Snow Globe

Holly Stevenson from Cheyenne Hills Church in Cheyenne, WY brings us this cool Christmas look.

From Holly: We wanted to create snow globes on stage and ended up with a wonderful set full of snowflakes and diamonds.

To create the snowflakes and diamonds we used 4’X8’ sheets of pink foam insulation. We laid out the pattern and traced it over and over until we had all the pieces we needed. The perk to using the foam is you can cut it with the same tools you would use on sheets of wood. There where 6 snowflakes each 3’ in diameter. While the snowflakes where flat, we decided to make the diamonds 3D by cutting a splice in each piece and fitting two pieces together. In total we created 16 diamonds at 3’ each, 24 diamonds at 2’ each 48 diamonds at 1’each. We purchased black plastic bulk chains to hang them with and used zip ties to secure them to the chains. We ended up with 7 chains on each side. We hung a row of 3 towards the front and 4 back to help create depth. The snowflakes and 1’ diamonds where painted white, the 2’ diamonds light teal and the 3’ diamonds darker teal. All using water based paint and rolled on. We also sprayed glue and sprinkled glitter on them all (much to the dismay of the cleaning crew and anyone who got with in touching distance of them).

To create the stands we took platforms (4’X4’X18”) we already had and placed plywood on top cut to the sizes we wanted. We did add leg supports to the edges that hung off the square platforms underneath. We took sheets of the foam insulation (thinner so it would bend better) and painted them white. We used a combination of snowflake stencils (I had found on etsy) and snowflake decorations along with a few larger card-board cutouts found on a prom web site to decorate the boards. We ran some wood edging around the bottom screwed to the legs. We screwed the panels to the top board and the edging along the bottom to help it keep its curved shape. The bigger platform was more complicated, contact me if you want info on it. It was 4’ off the floor and was built over a 8’x7’ frame. We have those movable stairs you see at hardware stores rolled up to the platform so people could get easily on and off.

The center “snow globe” was a play on negative space. The taller, larger platform center stage was the globe’s base. We have a giant screen, so we created a frame to block out all put a circular center section to create our “globe”. We created wood frames and attached panels of sheet insulation painted black to cover the screen. Our tech team even bought a snow machine to use on Christmas Eve. It was a neat effect but messy.

Hey I really like this. Could you elaborate just a little more on how you attached the stars/flakes to the chain with zip-ties?
