Shannon Carter from Central Christian Church in Beloit, WI brings us this stage design inspired by Glowing Channels.
From Shannon: The goal for our stage designs is to do things that will last at least a year and we also purchase supplies with the intention of repurposing them once we’re done with a design. The budget for this design was $1500 and we will be able to use almost everything again in different ways.
Column Construction:
To save some time we purchased free standing shelving frames from Menards. I liked the idea of fewer cuts and less measuring as well as the effect the support beams would give of lines under our “fabric.” I wanted the sides of our stage to stair step (6ft, 8ft, and 12ft) and the back to come just under the center screen (8ft) for a total of 10 columns. They are 2.25 sq ft so they are able to be free standing with no issues.
Lighting the Columns:
I wanted to create some dimension on stage so the thought was to light the inside of the columns with LED Tape and diffuse them with some kind of fabric and then line the outside corner with undiffused LED tape to create that contrast.
We used hot glue to secure the LED tape to the inside corner and then wrapped the column in a linen-like disposable table cloth. It was cheap and super easy to attach with just a staple gun. We were also able to get away with only covering two sides because of the way we placed them on the stage.
Once the column was wrapped, we then hot glued LED tape on the outside opposite corner from the inside LED strip.
Each LED strip is individually controlled with the use of a 32-channel DMX decoder.
Great instructions on wiring the LED strips can be found here:
