Mountainous Layers

Tim Gregoire from Element Church in Cheyenne, Wyoming brings us this awesome design inspired by Willow Creek’s topographic lines design.

They used SketchUp to import the actual GIS data from Grand Teton to generate 9 layers of topographic lines.

Then, using a similar construction method, they glued 4×8′ sheets of foam board insulation together, then used a projector to mark their lines and make their cuts with a hot knife. Then the set was painted a satin grey (valspar) from Lowe’s. The set itself was 30′ wide and 10′ deep. The layers were 11″ apart.

The set was lit with 1600 RGB pixel nodes from holidaycoro, with content for this is being driven by Resolume Arena. There were 2 100-node strands on the back of each of the front 8 layers. The nodes were held in place using wire staples.

This entire set cost around $1,000 to build including all materials and paint and took 3 days to build and paint.
