Starry Serenity

Inspired by the post Big Star Sky on this site, but faced with budget constraints and the unavailability of a rental option, Robert Vander Ploeg from Frontline Community Church in Grand Rapids, MI crafted their own 40-foot by 12-foot star drop curtain using four black photo backdrops.

From Robert:

Each star, made of individual LED pixels (1800 lights in total), was strategically placed for depth and visual impact. To enhance the effect, we alternated lights, allowing some to appear dimmer while others shone brighter.

This DIY curtain costs approximately $800, utilizing existing birch trees and lights. Additionally, a black pipe was repurposed to create a triangle rig for spotlights suspended over the drum enclosure and band.

To control the ambiance, white light-up birch trees were managed by dimmer packs and ART-NET nodes. These nodes decoded information from an ethernet cable into WS2811, allowing seamless control of the pixels. The entire system was orchestrated from a computer running Magic Q.
