Trees and Wrinkles

Dez Carrillo from The House: Modesto in Modesto, California brings us scenic canvas.

Their pastor wanted to talk about the passion of Christ – from the Garden of Eden, to the Garden of Gethsemane, then to Crucifixion, and finally to Hell. They decided to go with trees because they thought we could saturate them with color as well as make them really scary for those dark scenes of the story. They didn’t have permission to cut down full trees, so instead they went with branches painted white.

After they were cut and painted, the branches were attached to a wooden square base and then stood up and held up with aircraft cable. The metallic frames on either side of the screen were basic aluminum screen door material just scrunched and hung on wood frames.

Their video screen was 20×30 and they ended up using some atmospheric images on their screen during the sermon to create more of a theatrical stage feel.

The lighting consisted of Morpheus Faders on PAR 64 cans, Source 4’s with all types of foliage breakups, Apollo Multiform Spots and Washes, Chauvet Colorrails, Martin Mac 600’s and 700’s, GAM Reel FX with Flame Gobo Reel, and a few generic flame pots from their local party store. All of this show was programmed and run on an ETC Gio lighting console.

End of Days Depth of Design

  1. This is so cool! I love the depth the design team has created. Foreground, middle-ground and background elements. I wish I could have been there to experience it first hand. So engaging and memorable.

Thank you! Yes, I definitely was proud of how much depth was provided through the design. I always feel like most stage designs are probably more intense in person, as opposed to film or video :) but we do the best we can for all our audiences at home to make them feel a part of service.

Great design! is there any chance that I could get those images used on the screen in full quality?

    • Desiree says:

Hey Andy, sorry for the delay, I just logged in to check on the post and saw your comment. Of course you can get the images. What is your email address? Or just shoot me and email to Dcarrillo@thehouse.ws and I can send them to you. Thanks again for the comment :) it is much appreciated after the hard work the team put in.

Hey, I saw this setup and thought it was awesome! I was wondering how much it would cost to re-create this set. What did you use for the projection in the background? Also, could you send me the images as well and do we need permission to use them from someone other than you guys? Thanks so much! Zach

    • Desiree says:

      Hey Zach,

Sorry it took me so long to respond. Thank you for commenting :) To create this set it didn’t really cost us much money. The 100′ rolls of aluminum screen material were about $35 each and we bought 5 of them. The trees are actually branches we cut off some of our larger trees on our campus. They were about 30′ tall and were attached to line sets using aircraft cable. All the lighting we already had in our inventory, we uplit the trees with 2-3 LED pars per tree. We have a projection screen that is 40′ big and we just used ProPresenter to project our images onto the screen. If you want to send me and email to dcarrillo@thehouse.ws then I can send you the images. If you have any specific questions about the design, cost, or how to create it please don’t hesitate to email me :) thanks again!

Love the trees! Where were you able to acquire them??

    • Desiree says:

      Hey Daniel,

We actually just cut down large branches off of come of our oversized trees. We then painted them white, so they could accept light better, and then stood them up and attached them with aircraft cable to the pipes. Although now I’ve seen people put them in cement or sand, and I wish we could have done that, lol.

This is amazing. Is it possible that I could have a copy of the images used on the screen. We are doing a garden of Eden Skit and this would be a great addition.

Great set! Did you use front or rear projection?

  7. Adele Vannathy says:

    Hi Travis
I am the Exec pastor of Hosanna Porirua, a baptist church in New Zealand. This stage set is amazing! We would love to do something similar for our Easter Service this year.
Would it be possible to get a copy of the images and permission to use them please?
    Grace and peace
    Adele Vannathy
