Ryan Garey from Kenmore Alliance Church in Buffalo, New York brings us this great Christmas look.
From Ryan: We wanted a set that would work for Christmas as well as winter months after. We wanted it to look good on video as well as in person. We were inspired by other posts on this site and spun them together to make this set. If you wanted to make this set for any size stage it can be scaled up or down easily.
On the top, we did chicken wire with crimp-on outlets to power the curtain of Christmas lights. Ours is 10′ x 40′ with a string of lights every foot. The bottom backdrop is Mio 3d ceiling tiles made out of cardboard that we built a frame for out of 1×3 furring strips so it would be free standing which is nice to be able to run cables behind it.
We lit it with Phillips color-blasts that we already had. I put 4 on each on the floor and 4 in the ceiling pointing down. Between the two sets of lights, you can hit it with two colors from two directions which adds a cool dimension.
I made the faux sky pan lights with galvanized steel buckets. I painted the outside black and the inside white and mounted a standard socket inside. I used dimmable led retro bulbs that look cool on or off. I flew the top set with steel cable and mounted a pick point on the back to control the tilt.
For the fixtures standing on the floor, I bought an adapter that is used to mount a small tv to a light stand and then screwed that on the back of the pan which gave us the ability to tilt and turn them and place them on a light stand we already had. The tv adapter didn’t struggle with the weight but the stand did so I would use a heavy-duty stand or put sandbags on the bottom like I did.
For this set, we spent around $1,500 we had some of the parts and the light fixtures already.
