Crown of Thorns

This next incredible Easter design is from from Grace Church Reno.

The team at Mod Scenes built this awesome Crown design for Easter 2022 at Grace Church Reno. Alex Fuller of Fuller Lights and Jason Marquez from Grace Church had a great concept for a crown of thorns that would move during the service to help create a striking visual.

A 16′ Outside Diameter circle truss was used as the structure to attach the thorn vines too. The circle and crown were flown from chain motors. The Crown consisted of 4 – 90′ long vines that were wrapped around the truss. The Mod Scenes team created these vines from custom ordered oversize pool noodles. The nearly hundred pool noodles were melted together to form the 90′ long vines. The Vines were painted a mixture of browns and blacks to get the correct look.
The base color of the pool noodles was black to make painting as easy as possible.

The team at Mod Scenes created thorns ranging from 8″ to 36″ to attach to the vines. We found that solid pool noodles were the best for this. We use both a large bread knife and hot knives to mold and sculpt the thorns. Each thorn was attached to the vines with a dowel rod and Foam to Foam glue to ensure they would stay.
