Gripple Glory

When it comes to creating memorable Christmas experiences, sometimes the most impactful designs come from thinking outside the box. At Brookville Road Community Church in New Palestine, Indiana, our 2023 Christmas set design showcased this principle perfectly, combining handcrafted elements with professional lighting to create a stunning visual display.

By Nathan Whalen, Brookville Road Community ChurchThis was our set design for Christmas 2023. We made some pendant styles lighting fixtures from 1/4″ Plywood. We made a template piece and then cut the rest of the sides out with a router and guide bushing. We assembled the cut sides with some tape “folding” it together into a pyramid shape. We then put two of the pyramids together as a top and bottom piece forming the pendant. To do this well, we glued and stapled a small strip of wood that had an angle (that matched the angle of the top pyramid)to the “bottom” pyramid piece. Now the top and bottom pyramids were connected together by a bolt that went into a t-nut fitted into that wood support strip. We suspended them from the ceiling truss using aircraft cable and gripples, and then we ran a light bulb to each of them from a dimmer pack. The rest of the set was done with lighting fixtures and Christmas trees hooked up to dimmer packs.
The fixtures used were PCL Pixel Stix, PCL Zoom Pro 7s. Chauvet R1 Spots, and R1 Beams.

The total cost was just the cost of the plywood, hardware, and 4 of the Christmas trees. We already had the lighting in house.”
