About This Hex Pattern Design

This stunning hexagonal wood pattern was created as a baptismal backdrop for Passion City Church in Atlanta, Georgia. The design showcases how geometric patterns can transform a simple wall into a captivating focal point that draws the eye and creates visual interest for congregants and visitors alike. The hexagonal honeycomb pattern has become increasingly popular in modern church stage design due to its perfect balance of structure and organic flow.

The hexagon pattern represents unity and community in design language, making it particularly meaningful for church environments where fellowship and togetherness are central values. Each hexagonal cell connects to its neighbors, symbolizing how individual members come together to form a stronger whole. This thoughtful design choice adds layers of meaning beyond pure aesthetics.

What makes this particular installation stand out is the careful attention to craftsmanship and the warm natural tones of the wood. The material choice brings an organic, grounded feeling to the stage while the geometric precision of the hexagons adds contemporary sophistication. This combination of natural materials with modern patterns creates a welcoming yet polished atmosphere perfect for worship services and special ceremonies like baptisms.

Materials and Construction Insights

Creating a hexagonal pattern installation like this one requires careful planning and quality materials. The wood appears to be a light-toned hardwood, possibly oak or maple, chosen for its durability and attractive grain pattern. The consistent color throughout the installation suggests the wood was either carefully selected from the same batch or treated with a uniform stain to achieve cohesion.

The construction method likely involved cutting individual hexagonal pieces and mounting them to a backing frame. Precision is crucial when creating geometric patterns, as even small variations in angle or size become visibly apparent when the pieces are assembled. Many church stage designers use CNC routers or laser cutters to achieve the exact measurements needed for professional results.

For churches considering a similar installation, the backing structure is just as important as the visible pattern. A sturdy frame ensures the design remains secure and stable, especially in high-traffic areas like baptismal pools where moisture and frequent use can stress the materials. Proper sealing and finishing of the wood also protects against humidity and extends the life of the installation.

Pro Tips for Hexagonal Pattern Installations

Plan Your Layout First: Before cutting any materials, create a full-scale template or digital mockup of your hexagonal pattern. This allows you to visualize the final result and make adjustments to spacing and scale. Consider the viewing angles from different seats in your sanctuary to ensure the pattern reads well from all perspectives.

Invest in Precision Tools: The success of a geometric pattern depends entirely on accuracy. If you do not have access to CNC equipment, use high-quality miter saws with angle guides and create cutting jigs to ensure each hexagon is identical. Even slight variations will be noticeable in the final installation.

Consider Lighting Integration: Hexagonal patterns create interesting shadow play and texture that can be enhanced with thoughtful lighting design. Backlighting or uplighting can emphasize the three-dimensional quality of the pattern and create dramatic effects for different moments in your service.

Account for Expansion and Contraction: Wood naturally expands and contracts with humidity changes. When installing a pattern like this near a baptismal pool or in varying climate conditions, leave small gaps between pieces or use flexible mounting methods to prevent warping or buckling over time.

  1. Dang! That’s a lot of woodwork! I figured it would have been made from those plastic ceiling tiles. Crazy.

At first glance I thought so too – I wonder what the cost difference is. However labour would be be a ton more on the wood too. Using wood would make sense if you were leaving the woodgrain look, but it you’re painting it white anyways…
