Stage Designs

Checkered Past

Joe White from Evangel Heights Assemblies of God in Sarver, PA brings us this simple, checkered stage design idea.

The total cost for this design was $250.

They made a wood frame out of 1×2’s and spray painted them black. He ordered white antique ceiling tiles from online. They cost $2 per 20″x20″ square. Then they hung them with airline cable from the ceiling. It took them about a week to put up.

Then, for the missions convention, he added some country flags around the stage.

Creating Visual Impact with Geometric Patterns

This checkered stage design from Evangel Heights Assemblies of God demonstrates how simple geometric patterns can create striking visual impact without breaking the budget. The alternating black frames and white ceiling tiles create a bold, graphic backdrop that draws the eye while maintaining a clean, modern aesthetic. At just $250, this design proves that effective stage visuals don’t require expensive materials or complex construction techniques.

The choice of antique ceiling tiles adds subtle texture and depth to the design. Unlike flat painted surfaces, these tiles catch light differently across their raised patterns, creating visual interest that changes throughout the service as lighting shifts. The white color reflects stage lighting effectively, helping to brighten the overall stage presence while the black frames provide definition and structure. This high-contrast approach ensures the design reads clearly from anywhere in the sanctuary.

The modular nature of this design offers practical advantages for churches with changing needs. Each tile exists as an independent unit suspended by airline cable, meaning individual panels can be removed, replaced, or repositioned without affecting the overall structure. This flexibility allows the design to evolve—tiles could be swapped for different colors during seasonal changes, or some panels could be removed to create openings for projection screens or additional lighting fixtures.

The construction timeline of approximately one week reflects the methodical approach required for ceiling-mounted installations. Working overhead presents unique challenges, from ensuring secure attachment points to managing the physical demands of lifting and positioning materials. The team at Evangel Heights wisely invested time in proper planning and execution, resulting in a stable installation that has likely served them well for years.

The addition of country flags for the missions convention illustrates an important principle of adaptable stage design: building a foundation that can be enhanced for special occasions without requiring complete reconstruction. The geometric grid provides an ideal framework for hanging additional elements, whether flags, banners, fabric, or lighting fixtures. This approach maximizes the return on investment by creating a versatile backdrop suitable for regular services and special events alike.

Pro Tips for Geometric Stage Designs

Plan Your Grid Layout: Before cutting any materials, create a detailed layout plan showing the exact dimensions and spacing of your grid. Consider the proportions of your stage space—taller ceilings can accommodate larger panels, while more intimate spaces may require smaller, more numerous elements. Use painter’s tape on the floor to visualize the scale before committing to construction.

Choose the Right Hanging Hardware: Airline cable (also called aircraft cable) is an excellent choice for suspending stage elements due to its strength and minimal visual profile. Use appropriate weight-rated hardware including thimbles, cable clamps, and eye bolts secured to structural ceiling elements. Always consult with a qualified professional when installing overhead rigging to ensure safety.

Consider Lighting Interaction: Geometric patterns create interesting shadow effects when lit from different angles. Experiment with uplighting, downlighting, and side lighting to discover how your design transforms under various conditions. The recessed patterns in ceiling tiles particularly benefit from side lighting that emphasizes their three-dimensional quality.

Build for Modularity: Design your frames and attachment systems so individual panels can be easily removed or replaced. This allows for seasonal color changes, easy maintenance, and the ability to adapt the design for special events. Quick-release mechanisms or simple hook systems can significantly reduce setup and teardown time.
