Special Event Design

Softened

Aaron Spencer from Trinity Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida brings us this design for Mother’s Day.

Aaron wanted to soften the stage up quite a bit and do something special to honor the mothers in their church. He used 6ft of pipe and drape hardware with 5ft of Royal blue drape across the length of the stage. The accent swags and drops were done with 40 yrds of white tulle purchased for $38 dollars total and then he used Chauvet Par Quad 7 LED lights on the white tulle columns and Chauvet Batton Quad 6 lights for the blue drape spaces. Both styles of lights were from the ColorDash series. Total setup time was about 2hrs.

Creating Elegant Mother’s Day Stage Designs with Fabric

This beautiful Mother’s Day stage design from Trinity Baptist Church demonstrates how simple fabric elements can create a powerful emotional impact. The combination of rich royal blue drape with delicate white tulle creates a soft, celebratory atmosphere perfect for honoring mothers. By using affordable materials and strategic lighting, Aaron Spencer achieved a professional look without breaking the budget.

The pipe and drape system provides an excellent foundation for temporary stage designs, especially for special events like Mother’s Day. These modular systems allow churches to quickly transform their worship space while maintaining clean lines and professional appearance. The 6-foot height creates presence without overwhelming the stage, and the 5-foot drape length provides adequate coverage while keeping the setup manageable.

What makes this design particularly effective is the layering of textures. The smooth, heavy royal blue drape provides a solid backdrop, while the airy white tulle adds dimension and visual interest. When lit with LED fixtures, the tulle catches and diffuses light beautifully, creating a soft glow that enhances the celebratory mood. The ColorDash series lights offer excellent color mixing capabilities, allowing the design to shift from warm whites to soft pastels throughout the service.

For churches considering a similar approach, the key is in the details. The swags and drops created with the tulle add movement and elegance that elevates the design beyond basic pipe and drape. At just $38 for 40 yards, tulle represents one of the most cost-effective ways to add visual sophistication to any stage design. The two-hour setup time also makes this an accessible option for volunteer teams.

Pro Tips for Fabric-Based Stage Designs

Layer Different Textures: Combine heavy fabrics like royal blue drape with lightweight materials like tulle to create depth and visual interest. The contrast between solid and sheer elements catches light differently, adding dimension to your design. Each layer contributes to the overall atmosphere while maintaining a cohesive look.

Invest in Quality LED Lighting: The Chauvet Par Quad 7 and Batton Quad 6 fixtures used in this design provide excellent color mixing and smooth dimming capabilities. Quality LED lights allow you to change the mood throughout the service without physically altering the set. Consider fixtures with RGBA or RGBW color mixing for the most versatile results.

Plan Your Fabric Quantities Carefully: When working with tulle and draping materials, always purchase slightly more than your measurements suggest. Fabric swags, drops, and gathers consume more material than flat installations. The 40 yards of tulle used here allowed for generous draping and multiple accent points across the stage.

Consider the Lighting Angle: Up-lighting fabric elements creates a completely different effect than front-lighting. The LED lights positioned at the base of the tulle columns in this design create a soft glow that emanates upward, while the batten lights wash the blue drape from the front. Experiment with light placement during setup to achieve the most flattering results.
