Stage Designs

White on White

Cameron Dorsey from Calvary Chapel Houston in Friendswood, TX brings us this ultra simple but beautiful stage.

They wanted to design a more contemporary stage design for their Wednesday night service from what they generally do on Sundays. They sat down with the Pastor and looked at numerous different churches and worship band stages and he really liked the idea of a wall of lights. So they took the idea and drew up a few scale drawings. He picked out the one you see. The Screen is a 16’x9′ Screen they bought online and the 3 inch aluminum tubing frame was made by a gentleman in their congregation. The two pieces of truss holding it up were leftover from another stage design. The risers are 8’x8′ and 2′ tall. The LED lights are K9 LED Bulldogs mounted on six 10′ black poles and two leftover pieces of truss laying on the stage.

Why White-on-White Stage Design Works

The beauty of a white-on-white stage design lies in its striking simplicity and versatility. By using a monochromatic color scheme, you create a clean canvas that allows lighting to become the true star of your worship environment. When you remove color distractions from your stage elements, LED lights and stage lighting can paint the entire space with any hue you need for different songs, seasons, or sermon series.

This approach from Calvary Chapel Houston demonstrates how effective minimalism can be. The white screen, white truss elements, and clean lines create an architectural foundation that feels modern and intentional. The design proves that you don’t need elaborate sets or expensive materials to create a contemporary worship atmosphere. Instead, thoughtful use of basic elements combined with strategic lighting can transform even the simplest space into something visually compelling.

The 16’x9′ projection screen serves as the centerpiece, providing excellent visibility for lyrics and sermon content while maintaining the clean aesthetic. The aluminum tubing frame adds industrial texture without introducing competing colors. Meanwhile, the K9 LED Bulldogs mounted on black poles create depth through contrast while remaining functionally essential to the design.

Cost-Effective Implementation

One of the most appealing aspects of this white-on-white design is its budget-friendly nature. By utilizing leftover truss pieces from previous designs and having a congregation member fabricate the aluminum frame, Calvary Chapel Houston minimized material costs significantly. The risers, measuring 8’x8′ and 2′ tall, provide elevation for musicians while maintaining clean sightlines throughout the room.

For churches looking to replicate this design, consider what materials you already have in storage. Old truss pieces, unused lighting stands, or spare lumber can often be repurposed into stage elements. The key is maintaining that cohesive white color palette across all visible surfaces. A few gallons of white paint can unify mismatched materials into a cohesive design scheme.

Lighting Considerations

The LED light wall in this design serves multiple purposes. During worship, the lights can create atmosphere and energy. During speaking portions, they can be dimmed to keep focus on the pastor. The black poles that house the LEDs provide visual rhythm and repetition, drawing the eye upward and creating a sense of vertical space.

When implementing LED lighting into your white stage design, consider investing in quality fixtures that offer smooth dimming and color mixing capabilities. The ability to transition seamlessly between warm whites for speaking moments and vibrant colors for worship songs will maximize the versatility of your design investment.

Pro Tips for White-on-White Stage Design

Start with a Clean Canvas: Before implementing a white-on-white design, thoroughly clean and prep all surfaces. Any dirt, scuffs, or discoloration will be magnified under stage lighting. Consider using washable paint or materials that can be easily touched up between services.

Layer Your Textures: To prevent a white stage from appearing flat or boring, incorporate various textures within your color palette. The smooth aluminum frame, the matte finish of painted trusses, and the fabric of the projection screen in this design all read as white but provide visual interest through their different surfaces.

Plan Your Cable Management: White stages show every cable and power cord. Invest in white cable covers, plan your power distribution carefully, and consider wireless DMX or LED fixtures where possible. The cleaner your cable runs, the more professional your final result will appear.

Test Your Lighting Rigorously: Since your stage elements are white, colored light will interact with them intensely. Test your full lighting programming before services to ensure that your LEDs create the atmosphere you want without unintended color casts on skin tones or creating harsh shadows.
